Sign in to like   Reblog on Tumblr   Share   Tweet   Email Members of Nigeria's community in South Africa have raised concerns over renewed anti-immigrant violence, appealing to authorities to intervene before the situation gets out of control. Nigeria's presidency on Monday called the South African government to step in to stop what it said were "xenophobic attacks" following recent reports of violence against Nigerians and other nationals in the capital, Pretoria. The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) on Tuesday confirmed that Nigerian homes and businesses in Pretoria West had been attacked in several late-night incidents in recent days. "Homes and shops of Nigerians were targeted and looted in the events of past few days,

Zimbabwe's Mugabe praises Trump's 'America First' policy

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump's "America First" policy has an admirer in Zimbabwe's longtime president, who says the policy resonates with his own thinking. President Robert Mugabe, who turned 93 on Tuesday and is the world's oldest head of state, spoke in a birthday interview with state-run media. "When it comes to Donald Trump, on the one hand talking of American nationalism, well, America for America, America for Americans — on that we agree. Zimbabwe for Zimbabweans," he said. Mugabe has previously defended Trump, even saying he didn't want Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to win last year's election. He also said he hoped Trump's administration would remove sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe more than a decade ago over alleged human rights abuses and electoral irregularities. But Mugabe questioned Trump's plan to build a wall on the Mexican border. "It appears quite nasty. I don't know how

Who is the man running Nigeria while President Buhari is absent?

Nigeria’s president has been missing in action for more than a month now. But thanks to the work of his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, President Muhammadu Buhari’s absence has not been as keenly felt as it might have otherwise. Buhari departed from the country on January 19, ostensibly for a short period of medical leave in the U.K., activating a clause in the constitution that made Osinbajo the acting president in his absence. However,  his return has been repeatedly delayed : his spokesman Garba Shehu released a  fresh statement  Tuesday, assuring Nigerians that his extended leave was due to doctors advising the president to take a longer period of rest. “President Buhari wishes to reassure Nigerians that there is no cause for worry,” said Shehu.

Here's how President Trump has spent his first month in office

Donald Trump has been in office for exactly one month as of Monday at noon. That's 744 hours, approximately a quarter of which he has spent at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the Trump Organization's premiere Florida property.  Since Trump was sworn in as President at noon on January 20th, Trump has spent slightly more than a third of his time working. Those estimates come from an analysis of pool reports conducted by  The Washington Post . The Post categorized each of Trump's activities while he was officially working and estimated the amount of time he was either not working or asleep based on when the press pool was told to arrive in the morning and leave at night.  (Skye Gould/Business Insider; The Washington Post)  In total, Trump spent 6 hours attending intelligence briefings, 21 hours on foreign relations, 13 hours tweeting and 332 hours on other work-related activities. This includes everything from phone calls with foreign leaders (21 hours), time spe

Nigeria signals normality by putting Buhari's deputy in charge

Repeats story from Friday) * Uncertainty over health of President Buhari * Vice President Osinbajo running the country * Investors hope he will enforce economic reforms By Ulf Laessing LAGOS, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Nigeria's deputy leader is making wide use of powers granted by President Muhammadu Buhari, who is on extended sick leave abroad, as the country seeks to avoid a debilitating power vacuum while it confronts its first recession in 25 years. The West African oil-producing nation was gripped by instability in 2010 when then President Umaru Yar'Adua spent three months in a Saudi hospital while his aides shrouded his illness in secrecy. His deputy Goodluck Jonathan only took over after he died in the midst of a constitutional crisis. The Nigerian stock exc

Iran leader backs liberation from Israel 'tumour'

Tehran (AFP) - Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Tuesday for the "complete liberation" of Palestine from the "tumour" of Israel, renewing his regime's refusal to recognise Israel's right to exist. Khamenei was speaking at the sixth international conference in support of Palestinian intifada (uprising), one of a number of showcase events the Tehran authorities organise in solidarity with the Palestinians. "This cancerous tumour, since its start, has grown incrementally and its treatment must be incremental too," Khamenei said in a speech broadcast live on state television. "Multiple intifadas and continuous resistance have succeeded in achieving very important incremental goals. "It continues to advance towards its other objectives, ultimately the complete liberation of Palestine," he added.

Mark Cuban: Robots will ‘cause unemployment and we need to prepare for it’

Cuban's tweet follows an interview with CNBC on Friday in which he said President Donald Trump and his administration do not understand technology advancements. "I'm willing to bet that these companies building new plants ... this will lead to fewer people being employed," Cuban told CNBC , adding that "people aren't going to have jobs." "How does [Trump] deal with displaced workers?" Cuban asked. The "Shark Tank" judge is an investor in large technology companies including Amazon and Netflix. Cuban's comments come after major technology chief executives have warned about the impact of automation and AI on jobs. Last week, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk spoke about autonomous cars and progress in that area happening "much faster than people realize". "But there are many people whose jobs are to drive.

US Aircraft Carrier Strike Group Patroling South China Sea

China has warned against challenging its sovereignty in the region despite competing claims by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam Tensions with China may be racheting up with the deployment of a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group in the South China Sea despite warnings from China’s Foreign Ministry against challenging Beijing’s sovereignty in the region. Rear Adm. James Kilby said the carrier USS Carl Vinson began operations in the South China Sea on Saturday, a day after China wrapped up its own exercises,  Reuters reported . After weeks of training in the Pacific, "we are looking forward to demonstrating those capabilities while building upon existing strong relationships with our allies, partners and friends in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region," Kilby said. The deployment follows training operations in the area by the littoral combat ship USS Coronado last week, the Navy said in a  statement , and “freedom of navigation” exercises conducted i

Traffic study ranks Los Angeles as world's most clogged city

Early morning rush hour traffic crawls along the Hollywood Freeway on it's way toward downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017. Drivers in the car-crazy California metropolis spent 104 hours each driving in congestion during peak travel periods last year. Reuben Abati: I want to go to London…to see Buhari

Former presidential spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati has written on the controversial medical vacation of President Muhammadu Buhari. Abati decried the fact that Nigeria now have an absentee president who has been in London for over a month, even as he chided those who are supporting the president, adding that they are now embarrased and ashamed. When 15 million plus Nigerians voted for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 General elections, their expectation was that he would be available to serve them 24/7/365, and that those who fielded him as their candidate had done their home work to avoid what is curiously becoming the Katsina problem in Nigerian politics. Katsina! But we have now found ourselves in a situation whereby our President is now in London, for more than one month sir, ma, and we are here, and we have an acting President, who according to everybody, including the extremists and the mischievous, and the politically partisan, is beginning to try his best, with his
