Federal Govt Makes U-turn, Says New Minimum Wage To Take Effect From May 1, 2024 Instead of Jan 1

The Nigerian Federal Government has assured workers that despite ongoing negotiations by the Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage, they will see an increase in their wages starting May 1, 2024. The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Labour, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, during the May Day celebration in Abuja. Previously reported by LEADERSHIP, the government sanctioned a significant salary boost ranging between 25% and 35% for civil servants across six Consolidated Salary Structures. These structures include CONPSS, CONRAISS, CONPOSS, CONPASS, CONICCS, and CONAFSS.

According to LEADERSHIP News reports, A statement signed by the Head of Press, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Emmanuel Njoku, on Tuesday, said the increases take effect from January 1, 2024. The Minister said it was regrettable that the new national minimum wage was not ready before this year’s Workers’ Day, but that a wide consultation was ongoing to ensure that the document is out together as soon as possible.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have consistently urged for a swift wage review to address economic challenges. Recently, they demanded a new minimum wage of N615,000,emphasizing the inability of the current N30,000 minimum wage to meet workers' needs amidst economic challenges. They highlighted concerns that some governors were not adhering to the current wage, which expired in April, five years after the Minimum Wage Act of 2019 was enacted. This act mandates a review every five years to align with economic realities.
